What was once believed to be dead, might just have been brought back to life: Hungarian developer ‘Most Wanted Entertainment’ has announced plans to start working on a sequel to critically-acclaimed space strategy game ‘Nexus - The Jupiter Incident’ and is currently looking for adequate funding and support from the Nexus fanbase.

The company is seeking 400.000€ at crowdfunding site Games-Plant to supplement their own financing. As with other crowdfunding sites, everybody can participate and pledge a certain amount of money, which will only be deducted if the project manages to reach the funding goal within the time limit. Depending on how much you pledge, you’ll receive certain benefits ranging from a free digital copy of the game to a special limited edition signed by the developers up to actual profit share.

First news of Nexus 2 appeared back in 2006 after the video of an early tech demo was leaked on the internet. Due to poor sales of the first game from 2004, however, the project wasn’t developed any further and was never heard of again… until now.

This is awesome news indeed!

Stargate: War Begins has been around for years now, but is still being actively developed and improved by a dedicated modding team pushing out new releases fairly regularly. If you can think of any specific ship in any of the three Stargate shows to date, it has probably already found its way into this mod - so go check it out if you call yourself a Stargate-fan!

Of course everybody else is invited, too. Unmodded Nexus bores you? Then go play as a fake god from an alien planet and crush those puny humans with your pyramid ships and gate gliders! Lots of stuff to try out here, lots of enjoyment to be had.

Visit Stargate: War Begins mod on moddb.com

To top it off, the mod team is also currently working on a new campaign set in the Stargate universe - which is bloody hard work considering the game doesn’t actually support custom campaigns and there’s not an awful lot of documentation available for that… almost none, in fact. I’m very curious on what they’ll pull of there and wish them the best of luck, that going the extra mile and through all that hardship will pay off in the end.

Freespace and its sequel are among my favourite space-combat games of all time. As far as I’m concerned they totally nailed action-packed combat in futuristic starfighters. Massive capital ships, frigging huge laser beams and tiny fighters… and lots of ‘em! The Freespace: Evolution mod is my personal take on trying to squeeze some of that atmosphere into the tactical realm of Nexus - The Jupiter Incident.

The first public release of the mod includes most fighters and bombers from Freespace 2 as well as the basic cruisers and corvettes for each of the three playable races. A great deal of work has been spent on trying to get the look & feel close to what you’d expect from Freespace, including recognizable weapon effects, ship loadouts and a bigger focus on small fighter craft and bombers compared to the stock Nexus game.

Visit Freespace: Evoluion mod on moddb.com

The mod itself wouldn’t have been possible without the fine work of the Freespace Upgrade Project. Over the years, they produced lots of improved ship models and textures for the fan-driven Freespace Source Code Project. Because of this, the Freespace games look astonishingly good for games now more than a decade old. If they wouldn’t have allowed me to use their assets, Freespace: Evolution wouldn’t have been possible. Gladly, they did.

In case you weren’t already aware of it, there is a spectacular BSG-themed mod available for Nexus. In fact it’s probably the most eyecandy you can get out of seven year old Nexus at the moment, so be sure to give it a shot.

It doesn’t yet feature an awful lot of different ships, weapon systems or complex mission setups, but the quality of the existing content is astonishing. The models and textures look gorgeous just as the weapon and special effects. Definitely a must have for every fan of the reimagined BSG series and I can’t wait to see future versions of this mod.
